Soccer (Futbal) bridging the language and cultural barrier with refugees

Calling all soccer players, fans, teams and families in the Louisville area!!!!

We have an awesome opportunity to show our character off the pitch with the September RAK Louisville Challenge. Newcomer Academy is a JCPS English as a Second Language (ESL) school for students from our refugee community who are transitioning into the American way of life. This is a JCPS school and it is located right here in Louisville.

Newcomer Academy fields a middle school soccer team for the Spring season and they need our help. These students come to our country without very much with them. They are learning to adapt to our way of life and to speak and read English. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to flee your home because of danger and then build a life in a new country where everything is foreign.

Soccer is home to them.

When they play soccer, for those 90 minutes, everyone on the pitch is equal and everyone around you just a player. There are no language or cultural barriers to break down – soccer connects all of us. It is all about the game – that is the language we speak.

RAK Louisville is committed

We are committed to providing the Newcomer School soccer team with all they need to train and field a team this school year. The YMCA runs their after-school program and trains and puts together their soccer team. Right now, they are borrowing some equipment and trying to figure out resources for cleats, shin guards, etc. These student don’t have the cleats, practice apparel and everything else that most players have.

I know that the Louisville soccer community will come together to ensure that this middle school team will have what they need to start their season and field a team.

We need your help.

We need you to help us with the following items for the Newcomer soccer team.
